How big is a proton? The most accurate measurement yet suggests it's smaller than we thought. This could be due to an error – or it might just hint at totally new particle physics.

"The new experiment presents a puzzle with no obvious candidate for an explanation," says Peter Mohr of the international Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), which calculates values for fundamental constants in physics, who was not involved in the new work.

Like most quantum objects, a proton is fuzzy around the edges. Its size is defined by the extent of its positive charge rather than a crisp physical boundary. This charge radius cannot be measured directly but can be inferred from the hydrogen atom, which consists of a proton and an electron.

The electron can sit in a variety of energy "shells", each with a different distribution in space. One shell's distribution requires the electron to dive in and out of the proton, and another sits entirely outside the proton. The energies of both of these shells can be combined to deduce the proton's radius, using a theory known as quantum electrodynamics (QED).

Al Jazeera is reporting that Iranian authorities have begun filtering out Internet traffic for Twitter and Facebook, along with jamming Farsi-language radio newscasts by the BBC and The Voice of America.

Meanwhile, Twitter says it will delay a planned Monday night upgrade to avoid cutting daytime service to Iranians who have been using it to coordinate protests against the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Tweets from the streets of Tehran have been important to Al Garman, an Iranian expatriate living in Bellevue, Wash., who has been glued to his Blackberry, according to this story in the Seattle Times. "Many of the tweets are ahead of the news organizations. The stories in the news organizations come after the tweets," Garman tells the Times.

Iran's government has not commented on the restrictions, instead accusing the international media of exaggerating the reports of violence against protesters, and conspiring to destabilize the government.

Update: It actually was the U.S. State Department that asked Twitter to postpone its scheduled maintenance so its services could be available to protestors and activists on the ground in Tehran, according to this Washington Times story. That move worked in concert with a contribution from San Francisco technologist Austin Heap, who posted these instructions for how to use proxy servers to bypass government Twitter filters.

Also, tech savvy protestors can just as easily reach Twitter using proxy tools readily supplied for free at proxy.org, notes Chris King, director of product marketing at Palo Alto Networks, a network security firm.

The changing dynamics of news in India & challenges

An economy that’s growing at 8.5% and a very bright outlook for the future…that’s the India story at it’s best. But, the unmentioned success story, which in a way completes the picture, is the free press that our 60 year old democracy has managed to sustain.

Going back to 1870 when India’s first newspaper - The Bengal Gazette – to today’s plethora of newspapers and news channels; the media industry has come a long way. However, a little bit of analysis on the growth of media in India, who mostly serve India news reveals that the actual growth and the steep growth curve actually happened only later with the advent of the vernacular press.

This shift from the major languages, Hindi & English, towards regional languages made sense considering the diversity in the country. Here in India dialects change every few hundred kilometers and languages change from state to state. To effectively make people understand what all that’s important to them, news in one word, it was vital that they be addressed in their language.

That’s why, the vernacular press has done exceedingly well in India. The same idea was carried forward first by the radio and then by the visual media. No matter how important the national level news channels in Hindi and English may be, people across India do keep a tab on the news channels that offers them news in their own language. The common man simply loves to understand news in the language he is most comfortable in.

This way latest India News slowly became latest news from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore etc.

Moreover, this localization of content also ensured that breaking news, the mainstay of a news channel, also got a local flavor. So, one has breaking news from Delhi or Mumbai etc. News was essentially local in nature but due to the localization of the channels content policy, such news also got prominence.

But the addition of more local content in a way is leading to the dilution of the media’s core competencies. That perfect balance between what’s important on a local level and what’s important when it came to the bigger picture was still wanting.

Welcome, to the world of Internet news. An arena where news is served piping hot, latest news and breaking news concepts work and at the same time a judicial mix between international, national, vernacular and local content could be achieved with finesse.

The Internet news model holds great promise for a country as diversified as India. News, anywhere, anytime is something this model can indeed deliver. However, on the flip side, the low penetration of Internet in India is slowing down the advent of the Internet arena in India. As of 2008, there are 60,000,000 Internet users—comprising 6.0% of the country's population—in India.

But for Internet to perform at its best level there has to be a broadband connection. All that is considered as USPs of Internet; namely the seamless integration of content with video and a lot of interactivity thrown in, would perform at their optimum only on a super fast broadband connection.

Not only were the public caught completely off guard as to the severity of the weather they faced, with two months worth of rain falling in just twelve hours in some areas, but the effects were still evident almost a year later, with an estimated five thousand households still lying empty due to flood damage. If we use this analogy for the markets public and governments caught off guard massive losses in output, jobs, factory closures etc. years later still no improvment ,who knows what maelstrom awaits us we can only hope these billions in cash injections work..

Government To Make Billions From The Mortgage Crisis by: Aubrey Clark,

The mortgage crisis has had a negative impact on everyone, not just homeowners. Elected officials are working hard to pass legislation that is designed to prevent future banking debacles. Unfortunately, history has proven that when legislators over-regulate banks that it tightens the reins on lending. This is done by raising the bar on what it takes to qualify for a mortgage or installment loan. Predictably, it’s the middle class that will feel the pinch more than anyone. Specifically, it’s the middle-class, self employed small business owner that be injured the worst. Most people are aware that you can reduce your taxes by deducting expenses and qualified charitable contributions. What most people don’t realize is that small business owners live and die by those deductions. Tax rates have risen on the self employed more than any other segment in our society. To counter these tax hikes, legislators created more “loop-holes” write off’s and deductions for small business owners to use. For this reason, small business owners rely on creative CPA’s to maximize their deductions in order to show less income and pay less taxes.There are nearly 23 million small businesses in America and over 35 million sole-proprietors and almost every one of them employ savvy CPA’s to keep them in the black. The draw-back is that by doing this most self employed borrowers are unable to prove enough income on paper when applying for a loan or a mortgage. Traditional mortgage lending practices of yester-year required that borrower’s prove sufficient income when taking out a loan. Over the years, taxes have risen for small business owners at staggering rates, far above what they have for W2 employees. At the same time the self employed borrower's “provable” income has dwindled proportionately. Under traditional banking rules most of the self-employed people wouldn’t be able to qualify for business loans or mortgages. This would ultimately force small business owners out of business and cripple our would economy. This new business paradigm literally forced the banking industry to create lending products that catered to small business owners who could not prove all of their income. These products were called “stated” income loans and did not require borrowers who had good credit to prove their income. These products originally required good credit and sufficient assets in order to qualify for them. Responsible guidelines and common sense underwriting kept default rates on these products in line with conventional mortgages. Unfortunately, as competition for this segment of borrowers stiffened between lenders the stringency to qualify for these mortgages softened, thus the mortgage crisis. It is exactly this type of loan that our law-makers are trying to do away with through legislation. The new mortgage bill being bounced around has specific remedies for irresponsible lending. Meaning, if a bank loans you money and it can be proven in court (attorneys like this law by the way) that the bank was irresponsible in doing so they could be penalized. The definition of “irresponsible” is did the borrower have the capacity to repay the loan, meaning did they prove enough income. This bill will kill stated income loans, period. So where does this leave the responsible self employed borrowers who needed these loans to live and operate their businesses? This leaves them with higher taxes. Should this bill pass self employed borrowers will be forced to claim more income each year on their tax returns in order to qualify for car loans, mortgages and even business loans. This will negate any of the loop-holes and deductions they were promised in lieu of higher taxes. This means the government will rake in billions in extra revenue as a result of this bill. For example, let’s assume that a small business owner claimed $40,000 in income last year after deductions and business expenses. If she was in a 40% tax bracket she would pay roughly $16,000 in taxes. Under the new banking guidelines that same business owner may have to claim $80,000 In order to qualify for mortgages, car loans and business loans. Assuming she’s in the same tax bracket, she would now have to pay $32,000 in taxes. Multiply $32,000 by 23 million business owners and that’s one huge pay-day for Uncle Sam. You can bet that the Senators pushing this bill through congress are well aware of this left handed tax raise. You will never hear them mention it either, I wonder why?. You will hear about the naughty lenders that put good wholesome red blooded Americans in the street through predatory lending practices. You will never hear about the 20 million business owners who paid their mortgages on time and actually need these loans to stay in business.
